The timeline to resume flights operated by Boeing 737 MAX aircraft has officially been delayed one year since the second deadly crash.

On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 crashed, killing all 157 people on board. Days later, major airlines and government entities grounded the aircraft. After several delays, the aircraft is now not expected to return until more than a year after the crash.

Last Thursday, American Airlines released a statement to update passengers of the aircraft’s future, predicting a return to service in April 2020. Previously, American canceled the aircraft through March 4.

Continued cancellations mean about 140 flights per day through April 7 are set to be canceled to provide enough network coverage for the MAX’s previously assigned routes. According to American, the aircraft will be slowly reintroduced to service throughout April. The gradual reintroduction means there may be minor schedule changes through the month.

If guests’ flights are canceled and they don’t wish to rebook, they can receive refunds for the flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration has not put out a new statement on the reintroduction of the aircraft since Oct. 18, where it outlined messages it obtained from Boeing, which originated between two Boeing employees. Although the FAA said the content of the messages is “concerning,” the details were not divulged.

There is still no order from the FAA to lift the grounding restrictions placed on the aircraft.
