American Airlines’ New Basic Economy Fare

Several airlines are adding new options for travelers willing to sacrifice comforts and conveniences for a lower-cost fare. American Airlines announced its new basic economy fare, a no-thrills option similar to Delta’s basic economy fare.

The new basic economy fare comes with several drawbacks. Passengers will not be able to choose seats upon ticket purchase, but will be assigned at check-in. Paid seats can be purchased 48 hours prior to the flight. As with United’s basic economy fare, passengers will only be allowed personal items that must fit under the seat, whereas Main Cabin passengers will still be allowed a carry-on to stow in the overhead compartment. Basic economy passengers will also be the last to board.

Basic economy passengers can; however, enjoy the same Main Cabin snacks and in-flight services.

“American Airlines now has something to offer every customer, from those who want simple, low-price travel to those who want an ultra-premium experience via First Class,” said Robert Isom, president, American Airlines. “Importantly, this new fare product also gives American the ability to compete more effectively with the growing number of ultra low-cost carriers.”

Full AAdvantage miles and Elite Qualifying Dollars may be earned when purchasing these fares, but only one-half Elite Qualifying Mile will be earned per mile flown and one-half Elite Qualifying Segment per segment flown.

Elite customers and eligible AAdvantage credit card members will continue to receive priority or preferred boarding even when purchasing Basic Economy fare, and Elite customers and eligible AAdvantage credit card members can bring one personal item, one roller board and maintain the current free checked bag allowance.

Basic Economy fares will go on sale Feb. 10 in select markets, with the first flights occurring shortly after. The fare will not be offered on every flight.
