Driverless buses from All Nippon Airways are on the way to provide convenience for airline staff and passengers.
Now in testing at Tokyo Haneda International Airport, All Nippon Airways’ autonomous buses are the latest example of the airline’s tendency to lean toward technology.
“Once fully implemented, the autonomous electric bus will allow us to provide a more convenient transit experience for our passengers while also improving efficiency for our airport staff,” said Shinzo Shimizu, senior executive vice president, ANA.
The airline’s first trials with driverless buses started in 2018. The technology is the result of a partnership between All Nippon Airways and SB Drive Corp. SB Drive provided the advanced software that oversees safety by monitoring for hazards.
During the testing period, buses are restricted to a specific course at the airport. The bus will be evaluated based on its performance with little human intervention. The airline looks to fully implement buses at the airport by the end of 2020.
