The airline experienced two years of heavy losses in 2014 and 2015 but aims to turn a profit by next year. Alitalia reported losses of €580 million in 2014 and €199 million in 2015. “Reducing our losses is a first important step, together with the relentless commitment to improve our services, our fleet and our network with the opening of new strategic intercontinental routes,” said Luca Cordero de Montezemolo, chairman, Alitalia. “Return to profitability in 2017 remains our goal. Today’s results show that Alitalia has become more efficient in controlling costs and is on track for profitability by 2017. All our efforts are focused on reaching that target. Few airlines have undergone such radical changes as the new Alitalia.” In 2015, Alitalia carried 22.1 million passengers at a 76.2 percent capacity. The new strides toward profitability are also attributed to Alitalia’s recent codeshare with Etihad Airways. Plans are also underway to expand the current codeshare partnership with airberlin. Alitalia is bringing many changes to passengers, including major fleet upgrades for 122 aircraft, new lounge concepts, a mobile booking app, an in-flight magazine and crew training. As of April, overall guest satisfaction was at 87 percent, the highest recorded.
