Alaska Airlines brings Gogo onboard to provide travelers with satellite-based, in-flight WiFi services across its entire Boeing and Airbus fleet. The 2Ku service allows for faster connection speed for streaming top apps, like Netflix. The coverage extends to flights to destinations where coverage was previously unavailable, including Hawai’i, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Additionally, travelers no longer are required to wait until the plane reaches 10,000 feet to go online, and can access services gate to gate. Pricing details are expected in the near future.

“We conducted an extensive review to find a satellite Wi-Fi solution that will allow us to give our guests full coverage across our route map, including in the state of Alaska and on flights to Hawai’i. Our guests will soon be able to connect in the air just as they do out and about on the ground. This makes traveling more relaxing as well as productive — whether you’re scrolling through Facebook, checking email or watching what’s trending on YouTube,” said Andrew Harrison, chief commercial officer, Alaska Airlines.

Guests also now have access to the airline’s Free Chat and movie services on flights operated by Virgin America. The Free Chat option provides access to iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, entirely for free. Additionally, Virgin America’s RED in-flight entertainment system became complimentary last month.

Gogo 2Ku service rolls out on Boeing 737 aircraft in the first half of 2018, with up to 50 aircraft outfitted by the end of the year. The remainder of the fleet is projected for installation by 2020.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
