You might soon want to buy a new carry-on suitcase, as the International Air Transport Association suggested a new smaller standard size for carry-on luggage in an effort to free up space in packed overhead bins.

The world’s aviation trade organization worked with plane manufacturers Boeing and Airbus to find a size guaranteed to fit in bins of aircraft with 120 seats or more. The “optimal size” standard, according to IATA, is slightly smaller than many current standards, measuring 21.5 inches by 13.5 inches by 7.5 inches, including wheels. Major carriers such as United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines currently allow passengers to carry on bags up to 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches.

The goal in suggesting a new size is to provide airlines and passengers with the assurance that compliant bags can board the plane with no questions asked. “It’ll reduce fights between gate agents and passengers,” Thomas Windmuller, vice president, IATA, said at the organization’s annual meeting in Miami earlier this month.

IATA is currently talking with major luggage brands such as Samsonite and Tumi on developing and selling bags at the new size and expects they will be available later this year. Over its three-day event in Miami, IATA handed out sample suitcases already produced by manufacturer Crown Luggage of China.

Each new bag carries an IATA “Cabin OK” tag to show gate agents and flight crews the luggage is compliant. The tag also has a unique tracking number that enables owners to locate a lost bag via a website, okoban.com.

According to IATA, airlines interested in introducing the guideline into their operations include Brazil’s Azul, Lufthansa, Emirates, Avianca, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Caribbean Airlines, China Eastern and China Southern.
