Airbus completed a test flight last month of its new Airbus A330neo, marking a milestone in the development of this impressive aircraft. The A330-900neo flew for several hours over southern France before landing.

The plane is the next generation model of Airbus’s successful A330, but the new design can fly farther and more efficiently than the original, due to its improved engines and aerodynamics.

The A330neo sports a wide body designed for long-distance flights. It can hold more passengers than its predecessor. The company is also developing a smaller A330-800neo, which will seat fewer passengers than the 900neo but will fly 1,000 miles farther. The 800neo will likely take its first flight in the beginning of next year.

Passengers on future A330neo flights will enjoy larger overhead bins, LED lighting and upgraded in-flight entertainment. Other improvements include better bathrooms and a 2-4-2 economy-class layout.

The plane will likely enter service in 2018. Meanwhile, a pair of new 900neo planes will complete test flights for eventual certification.

Airbus has 212 orders for the A330neo family. The company hopes to replicate the success of its smaller A320neo, first delivered in January 2016.
