Home-sharing website Airbnb plans to invest nearly $5.6 million into European community projects in an effort to “preserve and boost the best of local customs, traditions and landmarks that make communities unique.”
With raised donations, Airbnb will help fund a new Community Tourism Program to reach out to non-profit organizations, charities and other community groups across Europe. These organizations are encouraged to apply for partial funding by demonstrating to Airbnb how the online booking platform can grow their cause and support their community.
Although Airbnb is a widely used service across Europe, cities like Barcelona and Berlin set limits regarding the number of properties that can be rented to visitors via the site as they struggle with their own housing, financial and tourism issues. With a goal of cleaning up its European reputation, Airbnb already implemented a few ad hoc projects throughout the continent in hopes of maintaining and strengthening its ties to local communities.
Final recipients of Airbnb’s investment will be announced in February.
