The impressive air traffic demand seen earlier in the year is beginning to slow. Data from the International Air Transport Association points to changes in the upward trend. “The demand for travel continues to increase, but at a slower pace,” said Tony Tyler, director general and CEO, IATA. “The fragile and uncertain economic backdrop, political shocks and a wave of terrorist attacks are all contributing to a softer demand environment.” All regions show an increase in air travel demand as late as June, with Latin American carriers leading the pack as European carriers brought up the rear. North American airlines didn’t perform too well, doing little better than European carriers, with only a 4 percent increase in demand over June 2015. Poor performance is blamed on recent terrorism, as well as decreased Ramadan travel. Domestically, all markets experienced increased demand except Brazil. India takes the top spot for domestic air traffic demand, with a 23.3 percent increase. “It is too soon to know whether recent terrorist attacks will have a long-term negative influence on demand, nor what will be the impact of Brexit and the events in Turkey,” added Tyler. “But it is vital that governments recognize and support aviation’s ability to contribute to global economic well-being and better understanding across cultural and political borders.”
