Air New Zealand’s Auckland (AKL)–Houston (IAH) service will be the first route with the new configuration of the carrier’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, set to offer a greater number of premium seats at the cost of overall capacity.
The airline will switch out the route’s existing 777-200ER with the new variation Dreamliner Dec. 8. Compared with the carrier’s current Dreamliners, the new layout iterations cut the number of economy seats from 263 to 215, but increase the number of Business Premier seats from 21 to 27, and premium economy from 21 to 33. Seat pitch in economy and premium economy is improved slightly compared to the model’s current layouts, with each getting an extra inch of space.
Travelers on the Auckland–Houston route will enjoy extra business-class seats compared with the 777-200ER; however, it comes at a price — seven fewer premium-economy and 31 fewer economy-class seats per flight. Overall capacity on the route per flight will decrease by 37 seats.
The carrier has three reconfigured 787-9 Dreamliners on order, with the first due this October. There is a good possibility the new aircraft will feature in-flight WiFi. A pricing structure has yet to be released.
Air New Zealand will fly the new Dreamliner on its NZ029/NZ029 Auckland–Houston service year -ound, with daily flights during peak season.
