Once again, the days surrounding Thanksgiving look to be some of the busiest travel days in the United States.
According to a report from AAA, more than 54 million Americans will look to travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving. The projection accounts for a 4.8 percent increase over last year. Projections show 2018 will see the most travelers for Thanksgiving since 2005.
INRIX, a global mobility analytics firm, predicts road travel in and around major U.S. cities could take up to four times longer than normal. The Thanksgiving period for 2018 is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 21–Sunday, Nov. 25.
“Consumers have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season: higher wages, more disposable income and rising levels of household wealth,” said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president, AAA Travel. “This is translating into more travelers kicking off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving getaway, building on a positive year for the travel industry.”
More than 48 million travelers are expected to travel by car; 4.27 million travelers are expected to fly to their destinations; and 1.48 million passengers are expected to travel by trains, buses and cruise ships.
