A trip to Antarctica can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but planning for it can feel overwhelming. Deciding what to pack, how to prepare and what to expect isn’t common knowledge. Luckily, Aurora Expeditions, a B-Corp-certified expedition travel company, is here to help.

Aurora Expeditions has been taking travelers to Antarctica for more than 30 years with a renowned expedition featuring naturalists, historians, biologists and geologists. These specialists come together to offer guided excursions, onboard presentations and first-hand storytelling.

To help travelers heading to Antarctica prepare, Aurora shared helpful tips from its experts for first-time travelers:

Packing for Excursions

It can be easy to overpack for a trip to Antarctica, but you can use ski clothing as a baseline. From there, layer with two–four insulation pieces and waterproof outerwear. If East Antarctica is on your list, additional layers are highly recommended. If you’re traveling with Aurora Expeditions, you’ll receive a complimentary Eco-Expedition Parka made from recycled PET with reflective patches, a retractable pass pocket and a zip-away hood.

Tips for Onboard

While onboard, dress is casual. Guests typically wear comfortable pants, light sweaters and lightweight walking shoes. There are also onboard Jacuzzis, saunas and Polar Plunge, so it’s not a bad idea to pack a swimsuit.

Comfort While Traveling

Although seasickness can be common, it is also manageable. Bring motion sickness medications, eat lighter meals and look to the horizon. The polar sun and glare off the ice is surprisingly intense, so sunscreen and Chapstick are also a must.

Wildlife Excursion Essentials

Make sure to pack binoculars, a waterproof backpack, dry bags for Zodiac rides and backup camera batteries to capture every movement.

Responsible Travel

Aurora strictly outlines environmental guidelines during land excursions to help travelers leave a positive impact on the fragile ecosystems. It also helps travelers minimize plastic use onboard.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
