One year after Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc on the Florida Keys, a long-standing resort reopened at the end of August.
Hawks Cay Resort suffered immense damage at the hands of last year’s hurricanes. In the following year, the resort underwent a $50 million renovation project, repairing the Irma-induced damage.
“After Hurricane Irma, we didn’t just look at recovering from the storm,” said Sheldon Suga, managing director, Hawks Cay. “That would have been the quickest and easiest way to do this, but it was an opportunity for us to reimagine Hawks Cay.”
The resort was forced to layoff a large portion of staff after the storm, but hired more than 200 people for the re-opening.
The resort will feature 177 hotel rooms, which brings it to 90 percent of its operating capacity pre-Irma.
“We have this family that works here and we take pride in that,” Suga said. “That’s one of the most important things … bringing the family back together.”
