In a study put out by Hotels.com, Chinese millennial travellers appear to be travelling farther and spending more money year over year.

Those who participated in the Hotels.com survey indicated overall they spent 40 per cent more on travel in the 12 months prior to the survey. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed indicated they are likely to spend even more in the subsequent 12 months.

Millennials born after 1990 are the main drivers in the uptick in spending, the survey concludes. The age group spends a higher proportion of income on travel than other millennial age groups do in China. For spending each day, 1980s-born millennials take the crown by spending an average $346 each day of travel.

Over the past 12 months, destinations in North America, South America and Europe were favorites among the age group. The travellers in these age groups rarely visit the same city or region twice. Next year, destinations in Africa and the Middle East are expected to rise in popularity, the survey says. All the while, fewer and fewer in the age group travel within Asia.

Overall, this group of travellers is looking to experience a wide array, from the local flavor to popular food at a destination to seeing sights and searching for adventure. While films, television and social media have an impact on travellers, the biggest inspiration for this group is other millennials.
