The work of Australian artist-sculptor Anna-Wili Highfield is the subject of the new exhibition “Spirit Faces” at Olsen Gruin gallery in New York City.
Highfield, the daughter of a puppeteer (who once worked as a scenic artist for Opera Australia), creates forms of creatures from the natural world exploring the connections and differences between consciousness and human and animal forms, expressed with her trademark blend of power and playfulness.
Works on view include “Self as Naturalist,” created from brass, stone, shells, cotton rag, watercolors, spray paint and freshwater pearls; and “Falcon,” sculpted from brass, velvet, onyx, freshwater pearls, ink and spray paint. The new exhibition, on view Feb. 6–March 6, is her first commercial gallery show.
