Last month, Philippine Airlines flew its first ultra-long polar flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Manila (MNL) — the first crossing of the polar region by a Filipino airline.
The flight took off from Toronto Dec. 17, 2017, at 12:53, arriving in Manila the next day at 06:10 — a 16-hour journey.
The 370-seat Boeing 777-300ER flew 7,200 nautical miles over Canada, Greenland, the Arctic Circle, Russia, Mongolia and parts of China.
The airline shifted to direct, non-stop service via the polar route to cut down the total travelling time between the destinations. The carrier used to operate flights between the two points with a stopover in Vancouver (YVR), totaling 21 hours. The new route cuts travel time by 4.5 hours.
From here, Philippine Airlines will operate non-stop Manila–Toronto flights on a regular four-times-weekly schedule.
In addition to the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, the carrier’s Airbus A350s, scheduled for delivery this year, will serve the route.
