Delta Now Offers Free In-Flight Texting

This month, Delta Air Lines became the first U.S. global carrier to offer free text messaging. The complimentary perk works with popular messaging apps iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. It is available on all aircraft with two or more cabins, which are also Gogo-enabled flights, through the Delta WiFi portal page. However, the amenity does not support the sending of photos or videos via text.

“We know many of Delta’s customers want or need to stay connected in the air and on the ground, which is why we’re investing in an easy, free way to send and receive messages inflight through some of the most popular global platforms. Coupled with our investments in seat-back screens, free entertainment and high-speed WiFi, free messaging is one more way customers can choose how to make the most of their time on Delta flights,” said Tim Mapes, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Delta.

The move is part of Delta’s recent push to enhance the customer experience, made possible through Delta’s high-speed Gogo 2Ku WiFi technology. Currently, the airline owns the largest fleet of Gogo 2Ku aircraft, and boasts the largest commitment to 2Ku of any worldwide airline. Through 2019, more than 600 additional aircraft are scheduled to be outfitted with Gogo 2Ku capabilities, which provides passengers with WiFi service similar to what they would experience on the ground.

Also this year, Delta installed its 500th aircraft with seat-back entertainment, making it the airline with the most aircraft with seat-back entertainment in the world. The airline plans to outfit more than 600 additional aircraft with seat-back screens by the end of next year.
