Oct. 19 marks the opening date for “Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospective” at the Seattle Art Museum. Timed to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of Wyeth’s birth, the new exhibit will include 110 paintings and drawings created between the late 1930s and 2008. Among the works on view will be rarely seen pieces from the Wyeth family’s private collections. Works are grouped in a series of galleries, beginning with paintings featuring some of the artist’s favorite subjects, including Christina Olson of Maine and Karl Kuerner, Wyeth’s neighbor in Chadds Ford, Pa.

From here, works are arranged in a loose chronological order from early watercolors to staged works from the 1940s and 50s, to more technical experimentation later in the 1950s and 60s, and on to Wyeth’s foray into abstracts including “Thin Ice.” Created in 1969, the painting is part of a private collection in Japan, and will be on view on the West Coast for the first time as part of the Seattle exhibition. Other works include a collection of nude portraits of Helga Testorf, created in secret, and Wyeth’s last painting, “Goodbye” (2008), not seen since it was on display at the artist’s memorial service in 2009. The exhibition also features a filmed conversation between Wyeth and director King Vidor. “Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospective” will continue until Jan. 15, 2018.
