Saturday Night at the Ballpark

by John Wroblewski

Jul 6, 2016

On a recent trip to Indianapolis, we finished work early on Saturday, and a minor league baseball game was a great way to spend the evening.

We made the short drive to Victory Field to watch the Indianapolis Indians (the Triple A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) host the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays). Opened in 1996, Victory Field was named for the victory of the United States in World War II. The original seating capacity of 15,696 was reduced in 2005 by 1,000 to make room for a picnic area. Victory Field is a beautiful facility.

In fact, in a 2015 survey, Baseball America ranked Victory Field  No. 6 on a list of minor league baseball parks. With the picnic area, lawn area and Indianapolis skyline in the background, it has an old-school feel to it, but it has all of the modern amenities and more. There are plenty of dining options, including unique and healthier options. I enjoyed a turkey dog while sprawled out on the outfield lawn area and watching the action.

It really doesn’t get much better. Because it was Marvel Super Hero Night, the Indians played in bright green jerseys (for The Hulk), which were auctioned off during the game to benefit Riley Children’s Foundation.  The Hulk threw out the first pitch and then posed with fans for most of the game. I might have been the oldest to get a picture with the big green guy, but I won’t apologize. This is one of the rare times that Rowdie the Bear (the Indians’ mascot) was not the most popular mascot, although he still spent a great deal of time posing with kids (I missed this photo op, though). We also took a tour of the Press Box and the suites.

The comfortable suite seats seemed right on top of the action, while the spacious concourse provided a wonderful view of Indianapolis. We enjoyed some very tasty food (strictly for reporting purposes, of course). Among other treats, their waffle fries were outstanding. It really was a perfect night, except the Indians lost 4–0. Despite the loss, the Indians are still fighting for a playoff spot.  Win or lose, it is always exciting at Victory Field.

The Indians boast some top prospects who will be in the majors very soon, including Tyler Glasgow. It was a wonderful night at Victory Field.  I thank the Indians organization for their hospitality.

Relax, Rejuvenate and Heal at StolenTime

At the namesake luxury, 5-star all-inclusive resort in Saint Lucia, the concept of “stolen time” used to be reserved for couples escaping to canoodle, reconnect and perhaps rekindle in sumptuous accommodations during a romantic getaway on the lush Caribbean island. But when StolenTime by Rendezvous rebranded in late 2022 to welcome all adult guests and focus more on wellness, the philosophy expanded to encompass self-reflection, personal growth and enrichment. After all, time is our most precious commodity, one that’s finite and too quickly slips through our grasp; we need to find those moments that matter and make them count.
