Passengers flying United Airlines can now surprise a family member, friend or colleague with an in-flight gift. The new program, named Celebrate, was originally proposed by Mary Bucher, food services billing supervisor, United Airlines. Bucher says the idea initially sparked when she was working as a customer service representative more than 40 years ago, and a surprise bottle of Champagne was gifted to a honeymooning couple. “I’m not sure where it came from — maybe the family asked the flight attendant to deliver it — but I thought it was a wonderful idea,” said Bucher. “All these years I’ve always thought, ‘That’s something we should do. Wouldn’t it be great if we could provide a service to customers to get chocolates or a special gift to present to their loved one or business associate on an airplane during their travel?’” Shoppers can go online to dutyfreeonboard.com and pick an item to gift to a traveling recipient. Items available for gifting are indicated by a Celebrate logo in the description. In the final stage of purchase, shoppers can create a personalized note. A flight attendant will then deliver the note and gift in a branded gift bag. A variety of gift options are provided, appropriate for passengers of all ages and tastes. Tobacco and alcoholic gifts are not available for giftwrap, but are available for pre-order and delivery, unwrapped. Currently, the program is available on international flights departing the United States and Guam.
