American food culture is known for two things; one is the sheer diversity thanks to the country’s status as a melting pot; two is the portion sizes. Yes, we Americans take pride in our Big Gulps and super-sized fries, and there is always someone who claims he can eat more than you. Now you can put that claim to the test in all 50 states.
Canvas Factory has put together a list of American food challenges that will test even the hungriest person’s appetite. Their interactive infographic showcases one challenge in each of the 50 states, from the Meat Mountain in Maine’s Binga’s Wingas to Taco del Mar’s five-pound Cinco de Mondo burrito in Hawai’i. All of these food challenges are either portion or time-based and showcase a unique dish that’s a favorite with the locals.
Burgers are the most common item, often topping five pounds of meat like at Florida’s Green Iguana Bar. Vermont has one of the few breakfast challenges at the Pittsfield General Store, serving up a plate of six eggs, six slices of bacon, two slices of toast, two orders of home fries, six pancakes and two pieces of french toast.
The best challenges though are the ones incorporating local cuisine. Sadie’s of New Mexico offers the world’s largest sopaipilla, weighing in at seven pounds, while Adam Richman has managed to down 180 oysters in one sitting at Louisiana’s Acme Oyster House.
