A New Orleans Sunday
Our first full day in New Orleans fell on a Sunday, and we managed to pack a lot into it, from the sacred to the hedonistic. We began with a trip to Jackson Square in the French Quarter, strolling about the park and observing the artist vendors' work and the performers (magicians, musicians and jugglers) before entering the lovely St. Louis Cathedral for Mass. The square centers on a bronze statue of Andrew Jackson, hero of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, and even on this chilly, gray January day boasted blooms and greenery. Because of both the weather and the fact the Saints would be playing the Philadelphia Eagles that afternoon in the Superdome, we didn't have to fight a crowd of visitors.

Share Miles with Family and Friends with United Airlines
As you look ahead to winter travel, United Airlines and its MileagePlus loyalty program introduced MileagePlus miles pooling, which allows members to contribute and combine miles into a joint account. Groups of up to five members can now share and redeem miles in one linked account. As the first and only major U.S. airline to offer this feature, United also allows any MileagePlus member, whether relatives or close friends, to be in a pool with other members.
Casual Dining in Cannon Beach
Last month I enjoyed quality time along the Oregon coast and tried a few new eateries while strolling and shopping in charming Cannon Beach, an artsy, funky, cute little town on the northern part of the coastline. First up was Public Coast Brewing Co., a brewhouse whose name gives a nod to all 363 miles of public-access Oregon beaches. Offering about a dozen beers on tap plus a great house-made root beer (growlers and six-packs available for your picnic on the sand), it offers reasonably priced and exceedingly tasty pub food. They don't do a lot, but what they do, they do well.
Beach Eats
A few weeks ago we spent a weekend on the Oregon coast with our daughter, her husband and her in-laws. On Saturday we enjoyed two decidedly different restaurants, each providing great dining within its own niche.

Dinner at Canoe
While in Atlanta for business, I tried a few excellent restaurants for the first time. The first night I went to Canoe, located on Paces Ferry Road, with CEO and publisher Francis X. Gallagher and director of sales William Papa. We started out at the lovely bar, waited on by a lovely woman named Joy. She picked out the perfect Chardonnay for me. In fact, it was a “secret” Chardonnay off the menu. It was delightful, and the fact it was “secret” made me feel special.
