This was the 15th annual baseball trip for my friends and I; however, this year’s “Boys of Summer” trip was combined with a bachelor party for my nephew Matt, making for a big six-day event.
Our trip started in Phoenix, where we saw the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field. Opened in downtown Phoenix in 1998, Chase Field is the first stadium in America with a retractable roof over natural grass. It really is a beautiful stadium. There is also a swimming pool for suite owners in right-center field.
The rest of the trip was based out of Las Vegas. Our stay at the Plaza was highlighted by meeting Blues legend Buddy Guy, who was the headliner for a special music event held poolside. We also spent lots of time in the casino. My game of choice is Pai Gow poker, and it was very kind to me this trip.
We spent Thursday night at the Plaza’s sports bar watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots kickoff the NFL season. The Plaza also features two fantastic restaurants, Oscar’s Steakhouse and Hash House a Go Go.
Every time I am in Vegas, I always stop at the Jerky Store. Their jerky ranges from the standard to the exotic. They even have meatless jerky. I have enjoyed several varieties, with alligator probably as my favorite.
I always rehash the famous quote: “Vegas was not built on winners.” But on this trip, I returned with more than I brought. More importantly, I enjoyed several days with great friends and family in celebrating Matt’s upcoming nuptials.
