Heading to Madrid? Exciting new exhibitions at Madrid’s Museo Nacional del Prado run the span from Michelangelo to Picasso. Until June 28, the religious-themed works of Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden are on display in the Jerónimos Building, including The Crucifixion, The Descent from the Cross and The Durán Virgin. A symposium on the exhibition will be held on May 5 and 6. Next, Ten Picassos from the Kunstmuseum Basel take center stage until Sept. 14, on loan while the Kunstmuseum is closed for renovations.
From March 31 through June 28, Michelangelo’s marble sculpture The Young Saint John the Baptist is on view in the museum’s Villanueva Building. Vandalized and damaged in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, it was refurbished at the Restoration Centre in Florence using innovative methods including lasers to remove burn marks from the surface of the stone. After June 28, the sculpture will return permanently to its home in Úbeda in the province of Andalusia.
