After falling in love with the NBC series Last Comic Standing a few years back, I started to look for opportunities to see some of my favorite comedians preform live. This led me to Helium Comedy Club on Sansom Street between 20th and 21st streets in Philadelphia.
In this basement-like venue, you can see many of the top names in comedy any day of the week. What I love about Helium is there is not a bad seat in the house. Weekday shows start at 8:00 p.m., and weekend shows at 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. I generally opt for the earlier show and spend my two-item minimum on dinner and a cocktail (or two). The other bonus of Helium is the two opening acts. Typically, the first is someone local and the second is on tour with the headlining comedian. I often find the first two comedians to be as funny, if not more so, than the headliners.
If you are ever in the Philadelphia area and looking for a “funny” night out, Helium Comedy Club may be the spot for you. Keep an eye out for some of my favorites, including John Heffron, Alanzo Bodden, Gary Gulman, Ty Barnett and Mark Saldana.
