Marco Polo’s observations still ring true today as visitors are captivated by China’s “most romantic city.” While Hangzhou is re-creating itself as a modern city, its culture is still found in its waterways, temples, old-style shopping streets, cuisine, and museums.
Explore the flavors of Hangzhou by sampling its distinctive cuisine including Dongpo pork, a braised pork dish, named for noted Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo. Plan a visit in October to coincide with the annual Hangzhou International Food Festival. Also in October, the Hangzhou International Silk Festival celebrates the fabric for which the city is known. Be sure to visit the National Silk Museum where eight exhibition halls trace the history of silk production.
Other annual festivals include The Dragon Well Tea Festival (April-May), Osmanthus Festival (September) and the West Lake Festival (October-November) celebrating the city’s history and culture.
