Iceland is the land of contrasts: fire and ice, light and dark — and, for many travelers, work and play. Where else can you have a business meeting in a stunning glass-clad seaside music hall and the next day watch a volcano erupt while standing on a glacier?

For business travelers, Iceland proves the ideal place to pull together co- workers from around the globe. It’s positioned right between North America and Europe, so flights for everyone (unless they’re coming from the literal other side of the world) won’t be too long. City bus route 55 runs regularly between Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík for about $17, and you can pay with cash or card when you get on. If you want a cushier transfer, Flybus costs around $30 and takes you from the airport to the central bus terminal, where you can catch a city bus or walk to your hotel. The incredibly walkable city offers plenty to do within a short distance of wherever you hold your meetings.

Harpa Conference Centre, that glass-clad music hall, also offers space for 3,500 people to attend conferences, meetings and other business sessions. With a location immediately next to the city center and an ever-increasing number of hotels, it allows you in your downtime to run out to Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, a historical hot dog stand; take a short browse along Laugavegur, the main shopping street; or visit any of the world-class museums, such as Perlan interactive nature museum or National Museum of Iceland. Once you’ve done all the work you need to do in the city, pick up a rental car and head out for a road trip around Iceland. Depending on how much time you have, you can do a short route (the Golden Circle or one of the others around Iceland) or a long route (the Ring Road). It makes sense to start your trip in Reykjavík because you can inexpensively rent a car there, your trip will start and end near the airport, and your business meetings likely take place in the city.

You can rent a car at the airport, but it’s easier to rent one in Reykjavík just before you plan to head out on your road trip. Parking in the city is limited and can be confusing. Reykjavík Cars proves one of the most affordable options, with rentals starting at about $20 per day.

The 155-mile Golden Circle is Iceland’s most well-known scenic route. You can drive the entire thing in just one day or spread it out over two or three, with a home base in Reykjavík. All of the stops lie a quick drive from one another, so in a short time you’ll see some of Iceland’s greatest attractions including Gullfoss, known as Golden Falls; The Great Geysir, which hardly ever spouts; and Strokkur Geyser, which shoots a plume of water 90 feet high roughly every 10 minutes. Also visit Tingvellir National Park, the historic home of Iceland’s ancient parliament, where you can walk, dive or snorkel between continents.

For travelers with at least a week free who want to see the entire country, hop onto the 820-mile Ring Road, the highway (Route 1) that circles the entirety of Iceland. Weather in Iceland can change drastically incredibly fast, and you’ve also got volcanoes to contend with. Before you set out on this trip, it’s imperative to check the weather. Since you can start out going either east or north, head in the direction where weather looks the nicest and then continue around the route from there. Iceland is breathtaking from all angles. Along the Ring Road expect to see Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, cliffs, and glaciers in the south; stunning fjords and small coastal fishing villages in the east; geo- thermal springs, whales and northern lights in the north; and towns in the west with quirky museums and delicious restaurants.
