Norwegian Cruise Line recently alerted passengers on its Hawai’i cruises in 2026 and beyond to the new Transient Accommodations Tax, which levies an additional 14 percent onto guests’ cruise fares.
According to the cruise line’s official letter to passengers, “Effective for sailings embarking January 1, 2026, forward, Hawai’i will expand its Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT), traditionally applied to hotels and other land-based accommodations, to now include cruise ship passengers.”
Designed to support Hawai’i’s conservation and cultural preservation initiatives, the tax is encountering legal hurdles, mainly from the cruise industry. Some guests looking to book Norwegian Cruise Line journeys to the state in 2026 noted taxes between $250 and $500 or higher for various seven-night Hawai’i sailings.
The tax will not apply to onboard purchases like specialty dining, drinks, retail items or spa reservations.
