According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, people with disabilities take fewer trips per year than those without disabilities. And with one in six people around the world currently living with a disability, it’s pertinent for travel brands and destinations to invest in accessible attractions and experiences. Luckily, a handful of apps on the market aim to ease the burden of traveling for those with disabilities — a move toward making travel more accessible to all.

ACCESSIBLEGO
As the top travel platform in the United States for people with disabilities to book travel, accessibleGO ensures every traveler’s needs are met, complete with discounted rates. The site allows users to search typical travel requirements — think hotels, cars, flights and equipment — by accessibility needs and book directly through the platform. After booking, accessibleGO will directly contact your chosen destination to confirm your accessibility requests. The platform also features city guides and a community forum for users to ask questions and exchange travel tips.

BE MY EYES
For those with low vision or blindness, Be My Eyes aims to make the world more accessible via live video calls with sighted volunteers and companies from all over the world. Users can request visual assistance in more than 180 languages thanks to more than 6 million volunteers who lend their sight to the visually impaired. Additionally, users can simply snap a photo and let “Be My AI” describe it to them.

WHEELMAP
As its name implies, Wheelmap is an app designed to help wheelchair users find accessible destinations to suit their needs. Users can mark public spaces worldwide for their wheelchair accessibility, with different colors to delineate different levels of accessibility. Locations marked green are fully wheelchair accessible, orange denotes partially accessible locales and red indicates no wheelchair accessibility. Users can also search for specific locations and contribute to the system’s database. Furthermore, the app is currently available in 32 languages.

These are just a few of the myriad apps currently available to assist the disability community when traveling. Other popular options include Tap Tap, KNFB Reader, FuelService and Medisafe.

Relax, Rejuvenate and Heal at StolenTime

At the namesake luxury, 5-star all-inclusive resort in Saint Lucia, the concept of “stolen time” used to be reserved for couples escaping to canoodle, reconnect and perhaps rekindle in sumptuous accommodations during a romantic getaway on the lush Caribbean island. But when StolenTime by Rendezvous rebranded in late 2022 to welcome all adult guests and focus more on wellness, the philosophy expanded to encompass self-reflection, personal growth and enrichment. After all, time is our most precious commodity, one that’s finite and too quickly slips through our grasp; we need to find those moments that matter and make them count.
