Tucked in the heart of Tuscany near the birthplace of da Vinci, Villa Petriolo is a luxurious countryside escape that blends historic restoration with modern elegance. A Small Luxury Hotels of the World member, the estate’s meticulous revival of a centuries-old villa and its surrounding properties transformed it into a haven of elegant design, hyperlocal cuisine and postcard-worthy moments. The seamless integration of its organic, regenerative agriculture revival, mimicking the once-bustling production of the property, influences its award-winning cuisine, wine production, spa products and amenities found throughout. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a single detail here that doesn’t speak to Villa Petriolo’s dedication to both the authentic past and hopeful future.

Villa Petriolo’s accommodations span both the bones of the original main villa and newly repurposed spa-style accommodations, each offering a distinct aesthetic and set of advantages. The villa rooms, housed within the original 16th-century main house, are a celebration of local history. High ceilings with exposed wooden beams; terracotta floors; and walls painted in earthy, muted tones create a warm and authentic atmosphere. The furnishings include antique armoires, hand-carved beds and vintage light fixtures, with windows framing quintessential views of the rolling hills, vineyards and livestock connecting guests to the surrounding landscape and original purpose of the space.
In contrast, the seven suites of the modern Wellness Retreat facility embrace a contemporary design while maintaining subtle nods to the estate’s heritage. These rooms feature sleek lines, neutral palettes and modern Italian furniture. At a slight remove from the main villa, these suites are just across from Mater Spa and come with their own smaller pool, lawn and cabanas for even greater tranquility, as well as a dedicated health bar, among other considerations.
Villa Petriolo is more than just a hotel; it is a comprehensive restoration project that breathes new life into an entire estate. The initiative began with the main villa but extended to the outlying farmhouses, some of which have been repurposed as guest accommodations or serve other hospitality functions, with continued restorations underway throughout the vast grounds.

Beyond the architecture, many of the estate’s original agricultural activities have been revived. The vineyards, olive groves and some animal populations including sheep, donkeys and bees are beginning to thrive as they did centuries ago, producing organic wine, olive oil, fresh produce and much more.
These goods are at the heart of the estate’s offerings, featured prominently in its culinary experiences, spa products and even the artisanal cocktails served at the bar. The estate’s wines are sold only here (take some bottles to go), as is most of Villa Petriolo’s production.
Dining at Villa Petriolo is a key experience that reflects the estate’s commitment to sustainability and local flavors with an eye on top-tier preparation and presentation. The property’s Tuscan tavern-style Osteria di Golpaj plates regional recipes for lunch and dinner, offering up covetable bites that are the stuff of American dreams but mere comfort foods here, enhanced by ingredients originating on site.

Expect the pastas hand-made, the produce estate-grown and seasonal recipes older than the United States. For a special occasion, and a must-try at least once while here, PS Ristorante is a fine-dining restaurant awarded a Michelin Green Star for innovation and achievement in top sustainable dining. Come for a blend of traditional and modern Tuscan flavors combined in artful presentation for an evening of haute Italian cuisine in a truly unique space with impeccable service.
The more recently opened Mater Spa is a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation, drawing mindfully on the estate’s bounty. Treatments incorporate olive oil, wine extracts and herbs grown on site. Massages of many kinds are available but consider embracing the villa with rituals guided by the land. Choose from treatment paths inspired by (and incorporating) pine, acacia, olive and more, each combined with additional flowers, herbs and agricultural bounty (think milk and honey) to address your current needs.
These multisensory experiences combine touch with 6-D music therapy and aromatherapies for a complete journey. The two-level collection of saunas, steam rooms, showers, baths and pools at Villa Petriolo is as carefully curated to speak to your specific goals as the property’s restaurants, rooms and treatments. Discuss your body’s current needs with the spa concierge and you’ll receive a wristband marked with the most appropriate path to take among the hydrotherapy facilities.

While Villa Petriolo offers plenty to keep you occupied, its location in the heart of Tuscany makes it an ideal base for exploring the region.
