A Few Firsts in the Big Apple

by Yasser Ogando

Nov 14, 2024

It is always exciting to visit New York City, but this time felt extra special. My future sister-in-law is visiting from the Dominican Republic, and I had the chance to show her around the Big Apple. We made sure to check off a few “firsts” I’d never experienced before. From taking the tram to Roosevelt Island and catching the sunset on the Staten Island Ferry to celebrating Día de los Muertos in Times Square, this trip had a little bit of everything.

Here’s a rundown of some of the coolest things we did that made that weekend in NYC one to remember.

Tramming to Roosevelt Island: A Hidden Gem

New York

Roosevelt Island.

I’ve passed Roosevelt Island on the subway countless times, but I’d never actually stepped foot on it. This time, we decided to do something a little different and take the Tramway. For those who don’t know, this aerial tram takes you from the Upper East Side to Roosevelt Island, offering stunning views of the East River and city skyline.

The ride is a total hidden gem — it feels like you’re soaring above the city, with views that are nothing short of breathtaking. This was the day of the 2024 New York City Marathon, so we could hear the liveliness and feel the energy of New Yorkers cheering on the participants. On the island itself we wandered around, taking in the quiet streets, Roosevelt Island Lighthouse and FDR Four Freedoms Park. It felt like a little escape from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, and I couldn’t believe I had been missing out.

Sunset on the Staten Island Ferry: A Classic NYC Moment

Next up on our agenda was the iconic Staten Island Ferry. I’ve taken this before, but this time we planned it perfectly for sunset. As we sailed across the water, the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the skyline and the Statue of Liberty. If you’ve never done this, I highly recommend it. The ferry ride is free and the views — especially during sunset — are some of the best in the city. We snapped a ton of photos, of course, but it’s one of those moments you just want to take in and savor.

We didn’t even mind the chill that started to creep in as the sun went down; it just made the whole experience feel even more magical. And the best part? You get a perfect view of Lower Manhattan without spending a dime.

Dia de los Muertos in Times Square: A Celebration of Culture

New York

Dia de los Muertos celebration in Times Square.

One of the most unexpected highlights of the trip was stumbling upon the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration in Times Square. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the most vibrant and moving events I’ve ever witnessed in the city. The streets were filled with colorful altars, face painting, music and dancing. It was incredible to see so many people honoring their loved ones in such a joyful, celebratory way.

The energy in Times Square was electric — there were people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate this Mexican tradition, and it felt like a beautiful reminder of the diversity that makes New York City so special. The intricate sugar skulls, traditional marigolds and sound of mariachi music filled the air, making it a truly unforgettable experience. I’m so glad we happened to be in the right place at the right time.

One of the things I love most about New York City is there’s always something new to discover, even if you’ve been there a million times. Whether it’s a tram ride to an island, a ferry ride at sunset or stumbling upon a cultural celebration in the heart of Times Square, there’s always a surprise waiting around the corner.

This trip was a reminder NYC is full of hidden gems and unexpected moments. And getting to share them with my future sister-in-law made it all the more memorable. Can’t wait for our next adventure!

Relax, Rejuvenate and Heal at StolenTime

At the namesake luxury, 5-star all-inclusive resort in Saint Lucia, the concept of “stolen time” used to be reserved for couples escaping to canoodle, reconnect and perhaps rekindle in sumptuous accommodations during a romantic getaway on the lush Caribbean island. But when StolenTime by Rendezvous rebranded in late 2022 to welcome all adult guests and focus more on wellness, the philosophy expanded to encompass self-reflection, personal growth and enrichment. After all, time is our most precious commodity, one that’s finite and too quickly slips through our grasp; we need to find those moments that matter and make them count.
