The world’s largest hot springs pool is at historic Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, in  Glenwood Springs, Colorado, a 2.5-hour drive west of Denver. This year, the resort added more ways to relax and soak with the introduction of Yampah Mineral Baths on the east end of the pool. Yampah Mineral Baths features five spacious new pools filled with pure mineral-rich water from on-site Yampah Source Spring, a shade pergola and an outdoor lounging area with a fireplace.

Yampah Mineral Baths was designed for adults and children to enjoy throughout the day, before transitioning to adults-only at 5 p.m. The five pools of varying temperatures are part of a design that includes waterfalls, infinity edges and a natural stone grotto. The new pools range in temperature from 52 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the Inhale cold water therapy pool, to 100–104 degrees Fahrenheit in the warmer Cascade Waters. Cold plunging has been known to help with workout recovery, boost immunity, decrease inflammation, improve mood and increase metabolism.

The Ute people were some of the earliest discoverers of this therapeutic hot spring and named it Yampah, meaning “big medicine.” The Yampah Source Spring provides Glenwood Hot Springs Resort with a continuous flow of 122-degree, mineral-filled water at the rate of 3.5 million gallons of water per day. The water is used not only to fill Yampah Mineral Baths and the historic Grand Pool and Therapy Pool but also to heat the resort’s 107-room lodge and historic bathhouse; clear sidewalks and pool decks of ice and snow; and heat domestic water supplies for showers, the athletic club, on-site laundry facility and more.

“We are thrilled to unveil Yampah Mineral Baths for the summer season,” said Kevin Flohr, president and CEO, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. “This new area is designed to be a meditative place to soak in the warm geothermal waters, try the cold contrast therapy, and relax in a beautiful mountain environment.”

With these new pools, the resort now offers a complete end-to-end water experience, with a quieter and more refined option in Yampah Mineral Baths on the east end, two historic pools in the center and the family zone on the west end. Guests can spend a whole day with friends and family, and everyone can find their corner to enjoy or sample the various areas.

There is no extra cost to enjoy the new Yampah Mineral Baths. All overnight stays at Lodge at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort and pool passes provide access to all open pools. No pool reservations are needed, and guests can come and go as they please throughout the day to fully enjoy the resort and explore trails, rivers, shops and restaurants.

Glenwood Hot Springs Resort also includes a full-service athletic club, shop, and the poolside Grill and snack bar. During summer, Red Brick Eats offers additional food and beverage options on the west end of the pool. From May 24 to Sept. 2, the pool transitions to extended summer hours, 8 a.m.–10 p.m., and the Sopris Splash Zone is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Williamsburg Inn Review

You don’t have to love brass chandeliers or brocade to appreciate what Williamsburg Inn does best: delivering a polished, unpretentious stay amid America’s most iconic living history museum. This is where you check in for traditional luxury without feeling like you’re trapped in a time capsule. The Queen stayed here (twice), and so did Eisenhower, but you’re not here to make history. You’re here to enjoy it, on your own terms.

Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu

Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
