I just returned from a trip to Iceland, where I visited many popular sites in the city and countryside. It was an action-packed trip, so I took full advantage of any moment of relaxation I could enjoy. I was lucky enough to visit two amazing spas, Fontana and Blue Lagoon.

We visited Fontana on the second day of our trip. Located in Laugarvatn in south Iceland, the spa features three steam rooms built over natural hot springs. I could feel, hear and smell the steam working its magic. Temperatures in the steam rooms can reach 122 degrees, with high humidity. It was a refreshing contrast to the cold Iceland air. Then it was on to the sauna, where temperatures can reach 194 degrees but with less humidity. After losing what felt like five pounds of sweat, I quickly ran through one of the outdoor showers before entering the mineral baths. Our group had access to the spa before it opened to the public for the day. It was a truly unique experience to enjoy the facilities and the spectacular view in peace.

Several hours before boarding our flight home, we visited the famed Blue Lagoon. A short drive from Reykjavik, the geothermal spa is popular amongst tourists and Icelanders alike. Unfortunately, we did not have their incredible facilities to ourselves. However, relaxation is not hard to find, even in the busiest areas of the Blue Lagoon. One soothing algae treatment and Icelandic Viking beer later, I was fully rejuvenated and ready for my flight home. A trip to Iceland is not complete until you have visited one of these geothermal spas.
