Brussels Airlines recently launched new uniforms for cabin, cockpit and ground operations employees, designed by Gabrielle Szwarcenberg, a young designer from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, and several other established brands. The new uniforms further illustrate the airline’s Belgitude, and were made using innovative materials like grapes and cacti for added sustainability.
The uniforms debuted at a recent fashion show for staff and media, and will be introduced onboard and at airports beginning March 1 for more than 2,600 cabin, cockpit and ground operations employees.
“I wanted the design to be elegant and sophisticated, while prioritizing the staff’s performance and comfort. That’s why we introduce items like turtlenecks or sneakers, to make everyone comfortable,” said Szwarcenberg. “Throughout the design, you’ll also find subtle references to Belgian icons, such as the Atomium on the scarfs and on the inner lining of the blazers. I really hope the staff enjoys wearing the uniform as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
The uniforms are dark navy blue with champagne accents, aligning with the new Brussels Airlines branding introduced in November 2021 and seeking inspiration from the glamorous airline uniforms of the 1960s. Designed to look good on all body types and people of all ages, the uniforms introduce turtlenecks and A-line dresses, as well as unisex pieces and sneakers.
Materials used include BCI-certified cotton, mulesing free wool for animal welfare, leather from cacti and more. In a further step toward sustainability, current uniforms will be collected and given a second life.
Hair, makeup and jewelry guidelines will no longer be different for men and women, with makeup optional for all and no longer mandatory for women.
