After a productive work trip in Mexico City, I took some time to reset at the beach. And what better place for that than Huatulco, Oaxaca? It’s a quick flight, lasting less than two hours and swift and painless. I arrived in the evening just before dinner time, so the check-in crowd was light.
I enjoyed the services of Premium Level, which offers a dedicated lobby and services complete with food and drink service. As is customary of such services, you can enjoy a welcome drink while going through the logistics of getting your hand band, which identifies to staff on property what you have access to.

Premium Level has a selection of rooms offering the best views. Mine offered the perfect balance of resort and beach view. I entered a spacious room complete with a small dining table, TV and a roomy closet for my daily fits. A fridge is restocked daily and upon request — there’s no limit for Premium bookings. I also enjoyed the sunrise from my balcony. I had access to the Premium Lobby for any questions and or recommendations during my stay. If you didn’t catch my blog on Huatulco, read it here.
This is an all-inclusive resort with two buffet restaurants and three á la carte offerings. Premium Level bookings have 24-hour room service. I also enjoyed unlimited access to the á la carte restaurants (based on availability). The concierge actually asked if I wanted to make reservations for the restaurants during my check-in process. There are four bars on property to enjoy both day and night. The resort also features tennis courts, basketball courts, beach-facing spa services and the entire beach at your disposal.
The property offers nightly entertainment after dinner service, which you’ll want to check out. On one of the nights of my stay, the hotel closed the on-site restaurants and hosted the entire property for a Mexican heritage night, where they showcased all the best dishes Oaxaca Barceló Huatulco has to offer. You certainly leave this place with lots of memories.

My top takeaways include my stay in Premium Level. The convenience of a dedicated relaxing lobby just for you is a must. I encourage visitors to also go on a sunrise beach walk. Be sure to visit El Agave restaurant (make your reservation as early as possible to get in). I got róbalo (sea bass), which had a delicious adobo marinade accompanied by steamed veggies and rice. You also won’t want to miss the Oaxacan enchiladas.
At the beach, the current is quite strong, so be aware of your surroundings. You’ll find markings letting you know where you can best enjoy the warm Pacific. Don’t forget to go into the nearby town for local fare, you won’t regret it!

May 27, 2025Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu
Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
