When I was a kid, Barnaby’s in Calumet City was the place to go when we went out for pizza. Many years later, I am happy to see very little has changed.

When the first Barnaby’s opened in 1969, it had dim lights, dark wood benches, a basic menu and separate order counters for food and drinks. Featuring longtime employees and managers who interacted with patrons, it also felt like a big friend reunion.

Barnaby’s had one style of pizza, and it wasn’t the deep-dish style always associated with Chicago. It was thin crust with a knotted edge. I maintain this is the real Chicago-style pizza.

Eating at Barnaby’s now is virtually the same great experience. A few new pizza toppings and appetizers have been added, but that’s about it. The pizza tastes exactly the same.

After moving north of Chicago, I found my new Barnaby’s in Niles. Just like at my first Barnaby’s, the manager adds to the experience. In Niles it is Larry, who has been there 42 years. A popular figure in the whole area, Larry is always good for a quick chat and laugh.

Going to Barnaby’s is much more than a fun, nostalgic trip. It is rare for places, especially restaurants, to remain the same yet still be wonderful for 50 years. Barnaby’s is a rare gem.
