Saint Lucia announced a phased plan to reopen island tourism responsibly, beginning June 4. Phase One includes welcoming international flights at Hewanorra International Airport from the United States only. In preparation, 1,500 hotel rooms are being prepared to open. The approach to reopening continues through July 31.
Other new protocols include requiring visitors to present certified proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of boarding their flight; all travelers must use face masks and practice physical distancing; travelers are subject to screening and temperature checks; taxi protocols will be implemented; and signage about health and safety protocols will be available with a QR code that takes travelers to a landing page for more information.
The island’s government is developing a COVID-19 certificate for hotels, requiring them to meet a dozen specific criteria for sanitization, social distancing and other protocols before they are permitted to reopen.
Phase Two will begin Aug. 1, with details still to be revealed.
