See both an active volcano and one of the world’s most acidic lakes at Poás Volcano in central Costa Rica. This stratovolcano has erupted 40 times since 1828, the most recent in 2017. Two crater lakes near the summit are especially unique, made acidic due to volcanic activity and sulfur. One of the most iconic volcanoes in the world, Mount Fuji is still an active volcano today (although it last erupted in 1708). A staggering 12,389 feet high, Mount Fuji is located on Honshu Island and each year sees thousands of visitors climb up it. Near Quito, Ecuador, is Pichincha, a stratovolcano rising nearly 16,000 feet above ground. Spanning two peaks, experienced hikers can attempt acclimatization climbs. The last eruption occurred in 2000. While fewer people ascend this volcano, many enjoy its grandeur from nearby locations like TelefériQo, on the western side of Quito. Volcanoes National Park, on the Big Island of Hawai’i, is home to not one but two active volcanoes: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, the former one of the world’s most active volcanoes, the latter the world’s largest shield volcano. The park is open to visitors and also home to rare flora and fauna.
