Grab a copy of How Stella Got Her Groove Back by Terry McMillan and head to Jamaica. In the book, 42-year-old Stella Payne sets off on a spontaneous trip to Jamaica where she finds love and turns her life around. In 1998, the book became a movie, filmed at Round Hill Hotel and Villas. Try to book Villa 11, the one featured in the film, for stunning views, a full dining room and outdoor tub.
Therese Fowler’s biographical novel, Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, features a story about a glamorous yet troubled relationship between Montgomery, Alabama, and main character, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. Part one of the novel and multiple scenes in the inspired series, Z: The Beginning of Everything, take place in the capital city, where Zelda grew up and met the famed novelist-turned-lover F. Scott Fitzgerald. The city was also where the couple lived from 1931 to 1932. Now their former home is The Fitzgerald Museum, the only museum to highlight their legacy.
Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, a No.1 New York Times bestseller and plot for the Academy Award-winning film, follows the lives of three women: Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson. These three women come together to write a tell-all book about working as a Black maid in the south. Many scenes from this story are set in downtown Jackson in the historic Belhaven neighborhood and Fondren District. From places like Brent’s Drugs to The Fairview Inn, visitors can visit many of the iconic locations featured in both the novel and film.
