Pudong International Airport is the main international airport serving Shanghai, the largest city by population in China. Completed in 1999, the airport was designed as an alternative to support international air traffic and other challenges Hongqiao, Shanghai’s previous primary airport, faced. It has quickly grown into the busiest international hub and the third-busiest airport in China. To help support Pudong Airport’s role in the thriving city, Landrum & Brown worked to create a world-class transportation hub that meets travelers’ highest standards.

The airport originally opened with one runway, but with high passenger traffic it eventually opened a second in 2005. The following year the airport started construction on a third runway to help support the influx of passenger traffic and tourists for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The 2006 construction also included plans for a new passenger terminal as well as a cargo terminal.

In September 2019 Pudong Airport finished construction on a South Satellite Hall which became the largest single satellite terminal in the world and increased the airport’s annual capacity to 80 million passengers. This helped the airport gain traction as one of the top 10 airports globally.

Today the airport continues to grow. Earlier this year it hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the main project of the fourth phase of the expansion plan, a project expected to improve connectivity in the Yangtze River Delta region, improve high-quality travel for passengers and increase hub operation needs for airlines. This is just the first stage of the fourth phase expansion, and a second is expected to follow. If everything goes as planned, the main area should be completed by December 2027. After total completion, Pudong International Airport hopes to raise its annual passenger capacity to 130 million.

To gain more traction, the airport offers a 2024/2025 winter-spring flight schedule. During the new flight season, the airport plans to carry out an average of 1,627 flights per day, including 915 domestic flights and 516 international flights.

Additionally, this year Pudong Airport launched a campaign for passengers called “Different Young Souvenirs.” Through this campaign, any souvenir purchases at designated stores such as Shanghai Specialties, Zhenlao Dafang and Shanghai New Gifts will receive a limited-edition customized gift bag from the airport’s cultural brand, “China Style, China Young.” Select souvenirs will be offered at 50 percent off, and gifts of more than 388 yuan may be shipped free.
