International luggage storage company Bounce researched Europe’s metro services across the continent’s capital cities and made some interesting discoveries.
While London Metro (the Tube) is perhaps the most famous of all of Europe’s metro networks, it doesn’t even come in the top five, although sixth is not bad. The Bounce research team found London loses points for its huge numbers of passengers (think crowded carriages) and a confusing layout, making it difficult for many tourists to navigate.
It is important to note Moscow and Kyiv’s metro systems were excluded due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the Minsk (Belarus) metro was not included due to the U.S. Department of State’s Level 4 advisory against travel to Belarus.
So, what city has the best metro system in Europe? The Oslo Metro came in at No. 1, with an index score of 8.06 out of 10. The Norwegian capital’s system, known locally as the Oslo T-Bane or T-banen i Oslo, offers 101 stations covering about 52 miles of track, and serves 15 of the city’s districts. The Oslo Metro also comprises five separate lines, and another is currently under construction. Oslo’s busiest station is Jernbanetorget, part of the largest transport hub in Norway, along with Oslo Bus Terminal, Oslo’s Central Station and the attached tram station. Oslo’s metro is often praised for its cleanliness and ease of use.
Sofia’s Metro ranked second. The Bulgarian capital’s metro is the only one in the country, and one of the youngest metro systems in Europe, having opened to passengers in 1998. The city’s metro system covers 32 miles of track and is accessible via 47 stations, including one at Sofia Airport. The airport station is a favorite with passengers, who say there is plenty of English language signage, including payment instructions, making it simple and accessible for visitors.
The Athens Metro, in third, offers cheap, quick and good public transport, providing a direct link to the airport, as well as to the busy Piraeus port area, where ferries depart for Greek island destinations. Athens offers 62 stations.
According to Bounce, other European city metros in the top 10 include Madrid (fourth), Warsaw (fifth), Bucharest Metro, Lisbon and Copenhagen (tied seventh), and Prague (10th).
In Hungry, Budapest Metro ranked lowest, considered the worst in Europe, possibly because it is the second-oldest metro system in the world, built in 1896. Surprisingly, the Paris Metro did not make the top 10, even with its 320 stations, the most of any metro system in Europe.
“Public transport in Europe is generally of a very high standard, relatively affordable, and is often well-signposted with English-language directions and instructions alongside the local language, making it more accessible and easier to use,” said Cody Candee, CEO and founder, Bounce.

But, as with all Paradores properties, the brand didn’t build anything new; instead, Parador de Almagro occupies a former 17th-century convent. In fact, it was the first Franciscan convent in the city.

Mar 1, 2026Spring Ahead
I hope the weather this winter has not caused too much disruption of your travel plans. Some very difficult days of snow and deep freeze nearly shut down travel in the eastern United States. We were fortunate to hold our Business Travel Symposium the week before a near-record snowstorm and frigid weather hit Philadelphia. Many thanks to our sponsors, IHG Business Edge and TAP Air Portugal, for making the event a success and adding to the panel discussion.
