With airports around the world constantly changing with expansions and redesigns aimed at making travellers’ time at the facility a true travel experience, it’s no wonder travellers take to social media to express their favourite airport spots. The leading travel search site in Asia Pacific, Wego.com, released a list of the most frequently tagged airports on Instagram, with Asian destinations taking top spots. “We’ve seen an evolution in airports over recent years in terms of design, infrastructure and services, but combine that with more people travelling today than ever before, add a social media platform like Instagram, and you see which airports truly resonate with travellers,” said Dean Wicks, chief flights officer, Wego. One of the top airports is Changi Airport in Singapore. Favorite spots include the rooftop gardens and the kinetic rain installation. The annual Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations are also a big hit on social media. The airport’s official Instagram account displays a well-organised array of images of everything from koi ponds to fanciful airport cuisine. Another top contender is Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Wego.com notes it was named the most Instagrammed location in the world just a few years ago, with many snapping images in the vaulted concourse and with the Buddhist pagoda. In Japan, Tokyo’s Haneda Airport receives attention for its marketplace in Terminal 2. Outside Asia, favourites include Heathrow Airport, John F. Kennedy Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. The LAX sign is a popular shot, and many Instagram photos taken in the U.S. airport include celebrity spottings. In the Middle East, Doha’s Hamad International Airport reigns supreme.
