There is little worse than discovering your flight has been delayed. Instead of sulking, take solace in the fact you have plenty of time to get caught up on work and relax before boarding.

First things first, get to your gate and set up shop. This is the best place for you to get new information on the status of your flight and stay up to date, in case anything changes before boarding.

Depending on the time of day and expected length of the delay, it may be a good idea to start looking into a ride home or nearby hotel. While this contingency hopefully will not be necessary, having a back-up plan can’t hurt.

Once all set up with worst-case scenarios mapped out, it is time to either relax or be productive. If this is a business trip, hook up to the airport WiFi and catch up on emails. Work on any upcoming projects and reach out to clients and it will be time to board the plane before you know it. If you’re waiting for a vacation to begin, research your destination and come up with itineraries for anything you have not already planned.

While a delayed flight is inconvenient, it’s a circumstance of travel. Learning to keep your cool and going with the flow is an important asset for frequent travelers.
