Idaho is a great state for being outdoors and 2022 brings lots of outdoor activities to the state’s largest and smallest towns. In Boise, the state’s capital, Treefort Music Festival offers more than 400 bands of various genres, celebrating 10 years of making music in multiple indoor and outdoor venues and stages in downtown Boise. This festival will be held March 23–27.
In spring, the small town of Fairfield offers visitors the opportunity to celebrate Camas Lily Days. Visitors can catch the purple camas lilies at this annual one-day festival on June 4 to celebrate nature with the annual bloom, bird watching, trout fishing and performances from Shoshone-Bannock tribal members.
Later in the month, Malad Valley Welsh Festival brings the customs and traditions of Welsh pioneers to Malad City June 24–26. The Malad Valley is home to the largest per-capita concentration of Welsh descendants outside of Wales. The area was settled in the 1860s by Welsh pioneers, and one important tradition was an annual eisteddfod, patterned after the music and poetry contests held in Wales for more than 900 years. There will be Welsh heritage games, music, wagon tours, crafts and food.
Experience the western tradition of rodeos at the 88th annual Lewiston Roundup, featuring bull riding, barrel racing, roping and other classic rodeo events. Held in the town of Lewiston Sept. 7–10, the 2022 Roundtrip will mark the 18thyear of hosting a PRCA Xtreme Bulls tour event, where 50 of the top Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bull riders compete for $10,000 in added money for the opportunity to ride some of the nation’s elite bucking bulls. There will also be a Chicks N’ Chaps event, an all-women’s rodeo clinic that teaches the sport of rodeo while raising awareness and money for local breast cancer patients and their families.
Oct. 5–9, celebrate the history and culture of sheep ranching and herding in the region at the 26th Annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which takes place in Ketchum and Hailey. Several ranchers in the region trail their sheep north into the mountains for summer grazing and then south in the fall. As the sheep enter the valley, a colorful sheep parade, good cuisine, sheep dog trials and plenty of music await.
