Spring is the perfect time to head to Austria, and there are several great events coming up you don’t want to miss.

Beat the winter blues at the Vienna Blues Spring Festival, March 20–April 30. The festival hosts legendary artists like Savoy Brown and Miller Anderson, as well as Raphael Wressnig, Hans Theessink and the Hamburg Blues Band. Concerts take place at various venues throughout the city.

Film lovers, don’t miss the Crossing Europe Filmfestival, held in Linz April 25–30, featuring more than 140 amateur films, documentaries and shorts.

Head up to the Alps to partake in the prestigious Wein am Berg festival, a unique wine and gourmet food event taking place in Sölden’s only 5-star hotel DAS CENTRAL. Top chefs from around the world showcase dishes, and winemakers from around the world hold tastings and winemaking demonstrations.

May kicks off the massive Wiener Festwochen, or Vienna Festival, an annual cultural event featuring local music, dance and theater in front of Vienna’s City Hall. Each year the festival attracts around 180,000 visitors, and admission is free.

Also in Vienna in May is the Genussfestival, during which the city’s lovely Stadtpark is transformed into a hub of epicurean delights as more than 190 exhibitors coalesce to showcase local culinary specialties.

Drawing thousands of visitors every year to the Ausseerland region is the Narcissus Festival, a unique celebration of the beautiful narcissus flower native to the area. Witness the idyllic alpine region as a fragrant sea of flowers consumes it, May 31–June 3.

Moving into the summer, celebrate the works of Austrian composer Franz Schubert in the small town of Hohenems at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg June 23–July 1, featuring an impressive lineup of daily concerts.

Direct flights to Vienna (VIE) from the United States are available via Austrian Airlines.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
