United Airlines unveiled its first phase of the United Polaris business-class rollout, which will conclude with a new fully flat business-class seat next year. The first phase included a revamp of the airline’s in-flight food and beverage offering, new custom-made bedding and the opening of the first of nine Polaris lounges, beginning at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
The Saks Fifth Avenue bedding includes plush duvets, mattress cushions, lightweight day-blankets, a large and small pillow for all travelers and a gel-cooled pillow on request. Passengers will fly comfortably with offered slippers and customized pajamas on flights longer than 12 hours. The amenity kits are created by Soho House and Co’s Cowshed Spa.
The thousands of old pillows and blankets from the airline will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation.
The food and beverage offering welcomes travelers with a pre-departure drink of their choice and gourmet chocolate. On morning flights, guests have the option to select a sweet and bubbly Mimosa or a savory and spicy Tito’s Handmade Vodka Bloody Mary, while on afternoon and evening services, they can create their own wine tasting menu with a customized wine flight.
The menu is seasonally updated and regionally influenced, designed in partnership with The Trotter Project. Customers will be offered made-to-order ice cream sundaes and a dessert cart.
Flight attendants and staff servicing United Polaris will undergo training at Saks Fifth Avenue, which includes new service procedures like a shorter meal service.
The business-class seat will launch on United’s Boeing 777-300ER aircraft next year before rolling out on the 767-300, 777-200, 787-10 and Airbus A350-1000 aircrafts.
Features of the seat include a recline-flat bed with direct aisle access, mood lighting, several storage areas, electronic privacy dividers and HDTV screens.
Last week, United opened the first of its nine business-class lounges located near gate C18 at Chicago O’Hare. Future lounges include Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Houston (IAH), New York Newark (EWR), Washington Dulles (IAD), Tokyo Narita (NRT), Hong Kong (HKG) and London Heathrow (LHR) with amenities to include custom-designed chairs, private daybeds, spa-like showers, bespoke art installations and chef-inspired hot meals.
