United Airlines ordered 50 new aircraft last week. The new Airbus A321XLR aircraft are set to replace the airline’s fleet of Boeing 757-200 aircraft. The new aircraft are expected to go into service in 2024, allowing United to serve additional destinations from East Coast hubs.
The Airbus A321XLR aircraft promise a better in-flight experience for passengers, with modern amenities including LED lighting, larger overhead bins and better WiFi connectivity. The aircraft also minimizes United’s carbon footprint, as it burns 30 percent less fuel per seat compared to other aircraft. United hopes to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2050, compared to its 2005 carbon footprint.
“The new Airbus A321XLR aircraft is an ideal one-for-one replacement for the older, less-efficient aircraft currently operating between some of the most vital cities in our intercontinental network,” said Andrew Nocella, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, United. “In addition to strengthening our ability to fly more efficiently, the A321XLR’s range capabilities open potential new destinations to further develop our route network and provide customers with more options to travel the globe.”
