Despite Superstorm Sandy and the following Nor’easter, a software breakdown on Nov. 15 that delayed at least 726 flights and high Thanksgiving travel, United delivered its best monthly on-time performance for 2012 in November. Slightly more than 85 percent of domestic flights and 81.2 percent of international flights arrived within 14 minutes of the scheduled arrival time. Jeff Smisek, CEO of United Continental Holdings, thanked his co-workers for “dealing so professionally with the impact of Superstorm Sandy and the Nor’easter,” which forced United to cancel 5,300 flights. During the 10-day Thanksgiving travel period, 88.3 percent of United flights arrived on time. On Thanksgiving Day, 95.4 percent of United flights landed on schedule, the second best single day since Jan. 1, 2008. Since the March merger of United and Continental, the carrier experienced several technical issues causing many flight delays; its on-time percentage bottomed out in July at 66.75 percent.
