United Airlines filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for six new daily non-stop flights to Tokyo (HND) from Newark (EWR); Chicago (ORD); Washington, D.C. (IAD); Los Angeles (LAX); Houston (IAH); and Guam (GUM). If approved, flights begin by summer of next year.

United says the proposed service meets consumer demand, connecting Tokyo with 112 U.S. airports from the five U.S. hub cities. United already serves Tokyo (NRT) with daily flights from Newark, Los Angeles and Guam.

United notes Los Angeles is the largest market for travel demand between the U.S. mainland and Tokyo and New York and Washington, D.C., are the two largest markets for travel demand between the East Coast and Tokyo. Guam is a significant Japanese tourist destination.
