Uber is looking into ways to point out drunk passengers in an effort to protect drivers from unruly customers.
Uber filed a patent for artificial intelligence that will help identify a combination of behaviors associated with intoxication, like excessive typos when using the app, time of day of the ride request, distance walked and how long it takes a passenger to call for a ride.
The system seeks to alert drivers or match suspected drunk passengers only to specially trained drivers. Intoxicated passengers may be denied the ability to share a ride with a stranger.
The catalyst behind the technology is the numerous instances of passengers involved in altercations with Uber drivers while under the influence of alcohol, as recorded by police reports.
“It would be cool if drivers got extra money for picking up drunk passengers. It’s not a big deal, but it definitely gets old after about the 25th time,” said Harry Campbell, author, The RideShare Guy blog.
